It seems that you missed the XATTR discussioon on the POSIX mailing list 
in 2001 ....

1) The PATH only xattr interfaces have been declared unwanted.
2) The Sun XATTR implementation follows all wishes seen during this
        discussion
3) If you do not believe, just thing about problems related to 
        XATTRS and find(1)

Also note:

1) The Sun XATTR interface is already standardized as part of the NFSv4
        standard
1) Linux & FreeBSD currently work on a full NFSv4 implementation that
        includes the NFSv4 XATTE interface which is the base of the
        Solaris XATTR interface.
