Jim,

Here's an idea. How about associating something visual with our
newsletter, like a logo?

Hey, I like it. The newsletter lives on the site now, so we should have some flexibility graphically. I'd love for us to come up with a name and a logo. Maybe Sara can talk to us about branding issues around the newsletter since she's working on OpenSolaris branding (and I know nothing about branding).

Sara ... any guidelines for something like this?

I also think this is fun idea Linda.

We do have some restrictions and guidelines on the usage of the OpenSolaris name and wordmark, but we can still do our own thing for the newsletter without breaking any rules.

- Create a name for the newsletter that doesn't include OpenSolaris. This may seem counter-intuitive, but we can't mess with the OpenSolaris wordmark or name, so if the goal is to create a graphic and name of some sort, we just won't include it. We can however use OpenSolaris in a tagline. For example, <graphic logo> The Monthly Register <text> OpenSolaris community highlights. This falls under fair use and as long as what we say is fair and true, we can say it textually (as opposed to graphically).

Ok, cool. So we can do it. We can come up with an original name for the newsletter, create a logo for it, and then just associate it (correct term?) with OpenSolaris using a text tagline. I can live with that. Over time there will be many publications, so this little newsletter could be one of many newsletters.

Can the text tagline be embedded in the graphic? What I mean is, can the name/logo, "The Monthly Register" (or whatever) and the text "OpenSolaris Community Highlights" (or whatever) be one image or does the text have to live separately as well?

I don't know the official answer to this question, but my initial reaction is that the tagline should be seperate.

- You can NOT use any sort of copyrighted artwork (or anything that looks too close to it) or name. For example, you can't come up with a graphic that looks just like the New York Times or Coca Cola logos, those are registered and copyrighted. It just means that it has to be your own art and a new name.

Yes, that's what I think we are looking for. Community members would create something original. I'm sure we have some artists out there.

- Whatever you submit should be licensed under the Creative Commons. Sun is not going to try to trademark the name or anything like that.

Yes, I think CC is best.

What would be the best way for us to accept submissions and to vote on them?

Well, we have two issues: a name and graphical representation. Perhaps we can use some space on the Content Project to post things and then just vote via conversation on list. Nothing complicated, really. Just consensus.

Can we use the marketing community site for this? I don't know how to do it, so that's why I ask. If we have permission of the submitters, we can leave the artwork up there.
