I'm still not following.  In a given repository, there
might be a dozen different branches that have a patch
which is textually equivalent to "that" patch ... and
differ only in that they are associated with different
branches, and thus have different parents.

This is way offtopic though, and I'm surely not the
best person to help you sort out such issues!
