Wasn't the key part of Freddie's idea to git rid of
the need for a plethora of chip-specific files?

NXP has 90-odd lpc2xxx chips (most ARM7, some ARM9);
and announced 9 lpc17xx chips (Cortex-M3).

Having a hundred or so chip-specific config files is
a messy concept...
