Software is one thing. But the underline hardware debugger needs to be fast as well. For example, I believe those two ICE you used will have high speed USB interface, fast FPGA inside, etc. And if you use a full speed USB and non-intelligent debugger like the those FT2232C/D based debugger, how can you beat the high end counterpart? Of course, the speed of OpenOCD can be improved.
