the size of the integers in the array is orthogonal to solving the endianess.

Shouldn't I have brought it up?

I would allow room for differing opinions on how crisp the
current API is. I didn't change anything(this time), just talking.

We're talking about *helper* functions here, so they then sit
on top of the current API. That said helper functions *can* migrate
to become more directly supported in the API, if such
a thing should make sense.
