We once had a Java-Applet that could handle audio. However the applet is no more maintained (or the company does no more share updates to the Applet source code publicly). So we are going to remove the Applet.
The best thing would be if the browser would natively support microphone access. With webRTC this might come true in some of the next generations of browsers.
