Requiring the jump through a database seems unnecessary, it could just
be a standard option to slapd and all of the slap tools. Or just slapd
and slaptest. Or ...
In particular, if OpenLDAP was built with --disable-monitor then the
information would be inaccessible. Not too useful, eh?
