This is a pretty big change that will need careful review. @kevinrushforth @nlisker There is some small overlap with https://github.com/openjdk/jfx/pull/1056 where I fixed some unnecessary invalidations in existing code. Either this PR or the other one will need to be adjusted slightly when the other is accepted.
