Trying to get a flash array, but that has only NVME boot devices.
Unlike SATA & SAS, NVME storage usually plugs directly into PCIe lanes without a separate controller in the middle and so you don't have as many different drivers to contend with.

I recently built a new system (with an AMD EPYC 8004-series cpu in a Tyan S8040 motherboard) that boots from a pool on a pair of NVME devices installed into the motherboard's M.2 connectors.

Installing OI from a usb stick was straightforward.
