why do you want to use large disks for rpool as you "should" not place data onto beside the OS.
Usually I use a cheap 100G+ SSD for rpool with all data on a datapool.

Not the OP .. my take :
SSDs are pretty unreliable in my experience, and it's getting hard to find good quality 1TB HDDs (WD Red Pros are 2TB or more these days, you can't get a 1TB anymore)

But, I have had no problems with 2TB HDDs on my rpool
