What about SPICE? It is an opensource protocol which works with KVM.
KVM is already part of Illumos. so might it be interesting to port SPICE/Ovirt as well? Then we would have a display protocol with similar capabilities as the ALP protocol. Clients can than be made from smal ARM based systems like the cubieboard2 running a stripped down android or ubuntu version of linux.
Session broker functionality will than still be missing.
The clients will not be "'stateless" like the Sun rays but this might be a nice direction to explore since KVM is already supported.
