the N40L dimms that come preinstalled are DDR3 ECC Non-registered.
did you buy a NON-ECC dimm?

my experience with the N40L has been putting a NON-ECC in with a ECC dimm,
you get weirdness from the BIOS..

*I* always run memtest after installing new memory no matter what.
