The correct approach is for OpenIndiana to offer both LibreOffice and OpenOffice. Both of them will have their merits. Perhaps one will ultimately prevail or perhaps both will continue to be worthy projects.
Apache OpenOffice does seem to have a large development team and has already added significant improvements. LibreOffice has been shipping in some Linux distributions for a while.
