So am I to understand that the cause of this is entirely software related? If there was an error in the hard drive then iostat should have returned some errors as well. This is not the first time this happens to me and last time it happened was on another hard drive.



This is exactly why we have ZFS. iostat only reports errors that the drive has found. If it or any of the IO path between it and RAM manage to corrupt the data that was silent data corruption prior to ZFS. With NFS you now get an error.

Not sure why the counts are different though.
