not that it matters too much, but on my Intel graphics box, when I cntrl-alt-f1 I get a blank screen, but it is still connected to a virtual console ... I can still log in (if I don't make mistakes) and pkill Xorg to get my screen working properly (although hopefully that is fixed after the latest update, the first nvidia update caused my screen to die if I closed tabs in firefox, or left the screen overnight)
