Thanks very much for the info. The Samsung "Unified driver for Linux"
package has buried deep in it two folders named "CUPS" and "SANE", so
fingers crossed it might work with OI148 (it does indeed have CUPS
management via localhost:631). On the other hand looking at those
folders there's no apparent reference to any .ppd file. So I'm a bit
confused as to what is being offered. Bizarrely Samsung.co.uk Support
doesn't have an email contact though I could write them a letter (!) or
telephone (chances of speaking to someone familiar with the Solaris 11
family at the end of the phone probably about 0). I'll keep digging and
report back any success.

OSol, including Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and OI-147 all have the
CUPS printing system, so all you need is the ppd file for the printer
you choose. I haven't checked OI-148, but suspect it keeps CUPS. I did
check OI-147 on VirtualBox with the LiveCD install.
The Brother DCP-9055CDN is not listed in the CUPS Add Printer dialog,
but you have an option to add the PPD file ("CUPS driver") for it.
Likewise, the Samsung printer isn't list, but you said you can get the
PPD file from Samsung. You might check that the Linux driver is the
PPD file.
My recent printer is an HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 all-in-one, and it
prints simplex and duplex. I haven't done any host-initiated scanning
(don't know if it is possible.) The OS's I've used with it are
OpenSolaris 2009.06, snv_134, and Oracle Solaris 11 Express, and I had
to find and then add the PPD file for it.
Configure CUPS with http://localhost:631 in a web browser. There are
comprehensive help pages there, too.

Hello all,
Does anyone have positive experience of a currently
available (not legacy) Multifunction colour laser printer (duplex
printing, copy, scan, fax) running under recent OpenSolaris or
OpenIndiana ?
I have located 2 possible models:
Samsung CLX-6220FX
Manufacturer mentions a "Unified driver for Linux"
Brother DCP-9055CDN
manufacturer mentions CUPS driver download.
Any other suggestions v. welcome - or even report that the above do
NOT work, or that there is no such thing would be very useful.
I've tried openprinting.org but didn't get anywhere.
Thanks
