I have tried using various configurations ranging from the system's automatic setup (i.e. no xorg.conf) to using various custom made xorg.conf files where I tried enforcing different drivers such as the VESA driver and different screen resolutions. None of these attempts has managed to produce an image signal in Xorg to any kind of monitor.

I'm using an XFX Radeon HD 5770 1GB version for GPU.

The monitor I'm using is connected to the HDMI port of the graphics adapter and it works fine. When booting into Windows 7 I get a full 1080p screen resolution in 32bpp and I even get sound. I have tried booting the system up with an older analog VGA monitor but the screen is still black on it.

Seems like the Radeon HD 5770; codenamed Evergreen (R800) is not supported by Xorg's radeonhd driver:

   The /radeonhd/ driver supports video cards based on

   * R500 style hardware: R5xx, RV5xx, RS6xx, RS740, M52 and up
   * R600 style hardware: R6xx, RV6xx, RS780, M64 and up
   * R700 style hardware: RV7xx

OI booted with GUI on my gentoo workstation with a RadeonHD 4670 (R700 chipset)
  I can only suggest to downgrade to an R700 based card.
