It would seem that this machine would have worked better with ahci mode when
you first installed opensolaris on it back in the day.  This is a lesson for
everyone to check their bios settings thoroughly before installing a new
operating system.

As it is a clean install of OpenIndiana it has very little on it yet (not been out that long has it!) so a re-install is painless. But as you say a lesson learnt, the machine was an replaced Windows XP machine which accounts for the BIOS settings being ATA :-)
