You should be aware that "not going to happen right now" might mean months. I can't speak for Noel, at all, but based on what we've worked out so far, further diagnosis requires that someone have access to a BSD system, installs ports, and does diagnosis from there. I don't have a machine I can use for testing that, and even if I did, remember that Open Babel is essentially based on volunteer time. It's hard to prioritize helping strangers on the internet along with work, family, and other hobbies. The problem you see may be specific to: - the compiler that was used to build Open Babel - the C/C++ runtime - the specific code used to compile Open Babel - the Open Babel source code - how all those piece go together See for example the "type 3" functions at http://blog.regehr.org/archives/213 where a smart compiler might realize that code depends on undefined behavior, and removes the code completely. This may be the case here .. or something else. But there are other resources you can try. As Noel pointed out, you got the binaries from ports. Contact the ports maintainer and file a bug report. At the very least, they will have access to a BSD machine for further investigation. Or compile the code yourself. Again, that will help narrow down the possible factors.
