Sorry - I'm on Windows. On Linux you need
./obabel -:"COc1cccc(c1)NS(=O)(=O)/C=C/c1ccccc1" -ocan

This syntax allows direct entry of SMILES strings.

Certainly. Having more than one Open Babel installed is the most
common cause of confusing problems. You can overcome these problems by
careful setting of environment variables (PATH, LD_LIBRARY_PATH,
BABEL_DATADIR, BABEL_LIBDIR). However, it's just easier and simpler to
delete the old version. To avoid these problems, I always install Open
Babel locally.
