I second the usefulness of this feature which is extremely convenient when
reading research papers, and I also would like to highlight my positive
feedback on how this is implemented in evince. 

To provide some contribution to the discussion, I found out that Zotero has a
similar preview feature implemented in their reader:
https://github.com/zotero/reader. I think the feature code may be the one in
the following link, but I am not sure since I am not experienced in
programming:
https://github.com/zotero/reader/tree/master/src/common/components/view-popup. 
Compared to the evince preview, the Zotero preview allows scrolling within the
previewed page which is a positive addition. However, the size of the evince
preview is better for readability.
