As far as I'm concerned, you can remove it. My main reason for that stance is that, as you wrote, the feature is implemented by calling an external program (ps2pdf), meaning you might as well use that program in the first place. However, I'm comfortable using the command line, and some people who are not might appreciate the feature being part of okular. Regards, Albert Wik.
