Inthe meantime I compiled KDE 4.8.3. Okular 0.14.3 fails the same way.
I have x11-misc/shared-mime-info-1.0 installed.
There is:

<comment xml:lang="cs">Dokument CHM</comment>
<acronym>CHM</acronym>
<expanded-acronym>Compiled Help Modules</expanded-acronym>

in the /usr/share/mime/packages/freedesktop.org.xml file.
