In our case the printing system is cups and the printer queue defaults are set though the printer ppd files on the cups server. You can get the current defaults using the cupsGetOption function described at http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/doc-1.4/api-cups.html#OPTIONS I'll attach a simple program, modified from an example on that page, which returns the printer default for duplexing.
