Hi Frederico,
In fact, we had 3 projects in parallel, at Linterweb my company, it
complicates things :)
Wikiwix: online search engine,
archive.wikiwix.com: archive of the sources of external links of
Wikipedia
On November 30, 2008, we released RC 0.7, which was to be the basic
version for the merger of Kiwix and Moulin, it included all the contents
of the foundation in all languages and we made Zenos
https://wiki.kiwix.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Page/fr&oldid=215
https://www.clubic.com/actualite-243284-kiwix-wikipedia-cle-usb.html [1]
In fact, wikiwix indexed all the projects of the foundation, and allowed
to realize the dumps and the indexes of the search engine for the
offline.
Wikiwix was proprietary at the time so we made a mini search engine that
allowed to exploit the indexes:
https://sourceforge.net/p/okawix/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/minisearch/
A lot of confusion, on the search engine part of Kiwix but it was free
in reading mode.
We then distributed Okawix with a proprietary binary.
In 2009, openZIM comes out and we transform the Zeno reader into Zim,
I'm still waiting for news:
https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org/thread/VXP2DFEQTCFVE2DSJ4HTWTCAXLZ23PWR/
Besides there I learned that someone from Linterweb had been to Buenos
Aires, except that I never sent people there.
We integrated ZIM into Okawix:
https://archive.wikiwix.com/cache/index2.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikiwix.com%2Fcategory%2Fokawix%2F#federation=archive.wikiwix.com&tab=url
Linterweb left the Kiwix project, I'm fed up with having to change the
name of products to be able to market them, the Wikimedia foundation
didn't want me to use wikipediasearch.net it became wikiwix, it didn't
want to extend the right to use the wikipedia brand to use the wikipedia
logo on RC0.7 then Kelson didn't want me to use the Kiwix name to sell
USB keys.
https://archive.wikiwix.com/cache/index2.php?url=https%3A%2F%2Fblog.wikiwix.com%2Fcategory%2Fkiwix%2F#federation=archive.wikiwix.com&tab=url
Especially since I was helped at the time by OSEO, to realize Kiwix in
open source, by bank loans at 0% (hence my role as financier), that I
could no longer repay
https://www.bpifrance.fr/nos-actualites/oseo-filiale-de-la-banque-publique-dinvestissement-lance-un-nouveau-fonds-de-garantie-pour-soutenir-la-tresorerie-des-pme-et-des-tpe.
In order not to have to repay, I declared that I did not have the right
to use the name of Kiwix which belonged to Kelson.
Linterweb will close on December 31st, I fear the worst for the Kiwix
association, OSEO can examine the files to see if there has been any
misappropriation of its assets, now Kiwix is selling a lot of things
in its name, and me for having let it happen for almost 15 years.
The best solution for the Kiwix association is to buy back from
Linterweb at a symbolic price the CDs of the RC0.5, which I still have
to avoid future problems.
Since archive.wikiwix.com is used as the Waybackmachine by Wikipedia
Francophone, I am setting up an association with some friends to make
ZIM external links of all the projects of the Foundation.
The hosting of the Wikiwix server will be financed by WikimediaFrance in
this new association, but I need a second server to generate the ZIM and
especially to distribute them by Kiwix.
I contacted the Kiwix association who very quickly referred me to Renaud
G and Emmanuel.
Now Wikiwix and the archives are opensources:
https://gitlab.com/dev_linterweb
I still intend to finish the work which is to find the way to offer a
part of the WEB for offline.
Good day to all of the spammer

Hello Pascal,
nice to hear from you!
I've not reviewed what the controversy is about, but in my own
experience trying to write Wikipedia articles about Kiwix etc. it's
very hard to find reliable sources able to disentangle some of the
intricacies of the software's project.
Looking in my own emails from 15 years ago, I see past discussions with
people mixing up Kiwix and Okawix, discussion about which project
should be called a fork of which, how much of Okawix was really GPL,
where openzim came from etc. Until a moment ago I had forgotten
everything, but I think now I get where the confusion comes from.
A Wikipedia talk page is probably not the most effective place to
settle the matter. It would be great to read more about your side of
the story, even just in a blog post, before it's all forgotten. We will
probably learn something, even if terminological quarrels aren't
resolved to everyone's satisfaction (as they never are when discussing
GNU/Linux distributions...).
Best,
Federico

Hello Samuel,
I have always trusted the Wikipedia community.
I think it all comes from there:

The editing battle is between Renaud Gaudin, Emmanuel Engelhart and me
:)
https://fr.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Discussion:Kiwix&action=history
I don't understand why they dispute the paternity of Fabien Coulon from
Linterweb, and I don't want to know why.
And when I asked the question to the Kiwix Team I was sent back to
them, so I'm going around in circles.
https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiwix
"En un principio el proyecto era mantenido por una empresa llamada
Linterweb. Sin embargo, Linterweb dejó de colaborar con Kiwix por
intereses comerciales (no aceptó que el formato de compresión fuese de
código abierto)3 Actualmente, muchos desarrolladores están colaborando
activamente en el desarrollo de Kiwix"
Nice to read you,
Pascal

Hello Pascal, nice to see you posting here. Can you link to the French
or Spanish Wikipedia discussions/edit conflicts?
I doubt anyone was trying to distort the english wp article, just a
question of what sources they found when researching. Tha is for
posting links; many people on this list have been involved with offline
tools since the days of the interweb and can help update.
Grateful to everyone who has contributed to Kiwix over the years, which
I have used on countless occasions.
Cheers, SJ

Hello,
Jim Wales aka Jimbo had the idea to make an encyclopedia, but the first
version of MediaWiki is attributed to Magnus Manke.
Emmanuel Engelhart aka Kelson had the idea to make Kiwix, but the first
version of Kiwix was made by Fabien Coulon for Linterweb.
In opensource software, it is customary to attribute authorship to the
coders of the first functional version of a software who made these
sources public.
This article don't mention Renaud or Emmanuel, but only Linterweb as
designer on April 26, 2007 :

I don't deny the participation of Emmanuel Engelhart on the mirror
aspect at the beginning of the project, as he says on the first message
on the list.
"Hello everyone, just a quick email to introduce the people involved in
kiwix. So far: Nytux (Fabien), he is the one who coded everything, so
he is the one to ask questions about the search engine and the rest. He
is an employee of Linterweb Pm27 (Pascal), he is the boss of Fabien and
Linterweb, he is the treasurer. I had the idea for the project, I am a
volunteer for Wikimedia France and I am responsible for dumps for
Wikipedia selections. There you go. Emmanuel"

Don't ask me why, but sourceforge didn't keep the branches, I don't
know why but the waybackmachine kept some bits.
Fabien Coulon aka Nytux aka Coulonito made the first commits on this
branch of Kiwix.

This screenshot is the first appearance of Kiwix, posted by Emmanuel
Engelhart, it clearly says developed by Linterweb, thus recognizing our
contributions at the time :
https://web.archive.org/web/20070409082337/http://www.kiwix.org/
index.php/Image:Ocean_blue_skin_example.jpg
Fabien Coulon had admin's rights from the beginning of the project:
https://web.archive.org/web/20070306091713/http://sourceforge.net/
projects/kiwix/
The merger between the two projects took place only in 2008.
In 2008 it was Guillaume Duhamel aka Yabause for Linterweb who also
worked on it, he created the common branch with moulinkiwi.
https://web.archive.org/web/20080915100426/http://
kiwix.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/kiwix/
https://www.clubic.com/actualite-243284-kiwix-wikipedia-cle-usb.html
Once again we only talk about Linterweb as a designer on this version.
As Guillaume points out, the only binaries for which we have not
published the code were made for Okawix, in no case has Linterweb
published binaries for Kiwix:
https://linuxfr.org/nodes/96954/comments/1420846
I am surprised to don't find the mention of the linterweb employees's
contribution on the Kiwix articles on Wikipedia in in english.
Like on the Hispanic article that the disagreement would be about a
disagreement on the sources. I broke the partnership following the ban
on exploiting for commercial use of the Kiwix project, as the external
source says.
I am not trying to know who carried these rumors but that someone
brings me the contributions of the creators' code.
Is there any public proof of the contribution of the code to the first
version of Kiwix that is attributed to Emmanuel and Renaud?
Sorry to come back to a 15 year old story, but the distortions on
Wikipedia articles led to an editing conflict on the French Kiwix
article, considering Renaud Gaudin and Emmanuel Engelhart as the
creator of Kiwix.
But all the links prove that Kiwix was created by Fabien Coulon for
Linterweb.
For Linterweb,
