There is no denying that moving from a largely fossil-fuel based
electricity generating system to all renewables is an astoundingly
difficult physical and political task. In fact 90%
of all US power
comes from coal, natural gas, and oil (in that order).
Nearly half (48.7% in 2007) comes from coal alone.Only 1.6% comes
from oil. On the face of it, calling for 100% renewable electricity
will do almost nothing to reduce dependence on oil, be it American oil
or anybody else's. But the shift to renewable power is still vital:
global oil production is on the cusp of terminal decline. It will
become apparent that the only way to keep the transport system going
will be to convert to electric motors.
