U.S. Economy: Second-Quarter Growth Exceeds Forecast (Update2)

July 27 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. economy grew more than forecast last quarter,
propelled by rising exports, commercial construction and government spending.
The 3.4 percent annual pace of expansion, the most in more than a year,
followed a revised gain of 0.6 percent in the prior quarter, the Commerce
Department reported today in Washington. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News
had forecast a 3.2 percent increase. The Federal Reserve's preferred inflation
gauge rose at the slowest pace in four years.
Treasury notes, which rallied this week amid a global equities rout, erased
today's earlier gains and the dollar remained higher after the report. The
strongest global expansion in a generation is spurring demand for exports,
helping the economy survive a housing recession and slower consumer spending.
``The economy is OK, it's not great,'' said Ethan Harris, chief economist at
Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. in New York. ``The housing market looks horrible,
but the rest of the economy looks reasonably good.''
