Just want to share an inspiring reading below...... Realisation: Is There Such Thing as Big or Small?
All suffering arise from delusion, our failure to see things as they really are. From delusion arise two more roots of suffering - attachment and aversion. Take for example, when the Jones' have a bigger car, one might become jealous and suffer due to attachment to wanting a bigger car for oneself, coupled with aversion that others have it instead of you. All this is related to delusion because the sizes of cars are relative. A car is smaller or bigger only in comparison to another. Even if one gets a car bigger than one's present, chances are that there is an even bigger car out there. In short, suffering from needless comparison of the relative is foolish. Wisdom 'emptiness' is taught in many ways. For instance, that which is relative in nature is intrinsically empty (or void) of any inherent self-characteristic s. For instance, while there are smaller and bigger cars conventionally, their definitions by sizes are so only when compared 'among themselves'; never so when 'by themselves'. They can be smaller or bigger only relatively; but never absolutely. 'Big' and 'small' thus co-define each other. Without one, the other simply does not make any sense. Likewise, this applies to all other relative or dualistic characteristics, such as high and low, rich and poor, gain and lose, male and female... However, this is not to say that which is big or small does not exist. They all do - but only relatively; not ultimately. The notions of big and small are thus dependently originated from each other, empty of value in themselves. The worldly tend to fight tooth and nail over the relative, while the wise who understand the unsubstantiality of the relative are calmly detached. Of course, the wise still have to relate to the relative for practical and social reasons. But even so, they are never caught up in conflicts within themselves or with others over them. If not, they would be 'relatively unwise', still far from ultimate wisdom! - Shen Shi'an When there is long, there has to be short.
