Indonesia's Indofood 9 mths net slumps 85 pct on higher cost, forex losses

JAKARTA (AFX) - World's largest noodle maker PT Indofood Sukses Makmur said net profit in the nine months to September tumbled 85 pct from the year before to 42.20 bln rupiah, pressured by rising cost and foreign exchange losses.
In a statement, the company said the cost increase and forex losses were due to one-time charges and credits, as well as expenses for retirement and severance payment.
Had there been no extraordinary charges and credits, net profit after tax would have been 259.5 bln rupiah, it said.
Sales during the nine-month period increased 3.4 pct to 13.53 trln rupiah while production costs rose 6.3 pct to 10.23 trln rupiah. Operating profit dropped to 1.32 trln rupiah from 1.55 trln.
The company's flour division, Bogasari, contributed 36 pct to sales, consumer branded products which include noodles also made up 36 pct, with edible oils and fats division 16 pct, and distribution 12 pct.
Indofood said gross margin fell to 24.4 pct from 26.5 pct and operating margin dipped to 9.8 pct from 11.9 pct because of marketing costs for its noodle products, higher costs of some raw and packaging materials, and one-time charges related to retirement and severance allowances.
Forex losses bloated the food company's charges to 1.07 trln rupiah from 939.91 bln a year ago.
The rupiah fell to 10,310 to the US dollar as of end-September from 9,170 a year earlier caused Indofood's forex losses to more than double to 563.86 bln rupiah from 264.78 bln.
As of Sept 30, the company's rupiah-denominated outstanding debt amounted to 4.8 trln rupiah, while dollar-denominated obligations stood at 179.5 mln usd against 317.4 mln as of end-December.
