Ainda não sei exatamente em que área da AI desejo me focar, visto
estar ainda iniciando o estudo do assunto, que me parece, no momento,
igualmente fascinante em todos os seus aspectos ( me desculpe não conseguir
ser nem um pouco elucidativo ou definido nessa minha resposta, por favor).

Olá Fernando, esse campo de pesquisa é bastante abrangente. Se você
quiser ter uma visão
geral pode simplesmente começar pelo livro da Elaine Rich "Artificial
Intelligence" ou do
Nilson "Principles of Artificial Intelligence" .
Se quiser algo prático e rápido (que não depende
de saber linguagens lógicas como PROLOG e LISP) vc pode consultar o livro
do Herbert Schildt:
"Artificial Intelligence Using C". Essa é uma referência do tipo "quick
and dirt" não muito padrão em
relação ao que é feito na área.
De qualquer forma vc deve escolher uma subárea em que vc estiver mais
interessado para se aprofundar. Por exemplo: Existem sistemas baseados
em lógica de primeira
ordem que conseguem provar teoremas simples, talvez isso interesse mais ao
pessoal da lista.
Há também uma de pesquisa fortemente relacionada que é o estudo das
redes neurais artificiais.
