Central Park, Manhattan, N.Y. City Thru Friday, October 11th - American Woodcock was among many migrants found at the n. end of Central Park on Friday. A Marsh Wren was seen near the south end of the park, also on Friday. At least 17 species of migratory American warblers were seen and all by multiple observers, many also photographed. A few of those species were very slightly late. The late-dates for past occurrence of Northern Waterthrush at Central Park run into the month of December, and that month has also seen a surprising number of other American warbler species staying extraordinarily late in New York County, with many having been in Manhattan and many, but hardly all, of those found in Central Park in past Decembers.
Also noted at Central Park again on Friday Oct. 11 were House Wren and plenty of Winter Wrens, Carolina Wren, Blue-headed Vireos, Red-breasted Nuthatches - the latter also lately showing up in many more smaller and larger parks and green spaces of Manhattan - and such neotropical-wintering migrants as Scarlet Tanager and Indigo Bunting. Sparrow species seen thru Friday at Central Park included White-crowned Sparrows, and at least 6 other species in that tribe, plus E. Towhees. A now rather long long and late staying Yellow-billed Cuckoo continued at Central Park thru Friday, still going after the invasive Spotted Lanternflies among other prey items. Continuing birds on the waters in Central Park included Ruddy Duck, American Coot, and among additional duckage, N. Shovelers and long-staying Wood Ducks. The total number of species of wild, native birds in Central Park on Friday was nearly one-hundred, seen collectively by hundreds of observers at all times of the day and in every sector of the park, and including some flyovers, particularly of the many raptors on the move as well as Turkey Vultures, while also including such birds as Chimney Swift. Thanks to many keen, courteous, quiet observers for many sightings and reports.
