That's the Jones Beach Boys that Andrew knew. But I started birding Jones Beach around 1982 or so. Sy was one of the first birders I knew (and he was always happy to chat and teach). The rest of the Jones Beach group then included Al Wollin, Neil Ward, Stephen Dempsey, Manny Levine, and Matt Bayer. Sy was the last of that troop.
One little story that I have. A few years ago, I ran across Sy at Point Lookout. He asked me about whether I had seen any Purple Sandpipers. I said yes, but you have to go out on the jetty to be able to see them. To that, he replied that "five years ago I would have done that". He was 85 when he said that. We should all be as spry as Sy at 80 . 85 . even 90. He will be missed.
