Manhattan, N.Y. City - Mississippi Kite sightings, of recent days this May...

For a nice ‘short-story’ on the sightings of Mississppi Kite[s] - perhaps one
and the same bird, yet also possible more than one kite was involved - from
SATURDAY, May 21st, check out the reports from Ed Gaillard, a long-time
observer from Manhattan, and also from Ryan Serio each somewhat adding to the
other. Interesting things may show in -and through- foggy conditions at times,
as the Saturday just-past began in and around Manhattan.

The above checklists each with fortuitous photographs… and there were some
additional observers on the day, for perhaps same (or perhaps different)
bird[s].

On MONDAY, May 23rd, a checklist has notes on the sighting, and thanks to one
of N.Y. County’s highly-active and respected observers for alerting this day’s
sighting of this species yet again (at least the 3rd, or more, of this Kite
species to be noted in this month flying in, ot past N.Y. County locations!):

and there were a number of independent (additional) observers of the above May
23rd Kite flying over Central Park; M.B. Kooper made photos (early-a.m.) of
Monday’s (presumed one on the morning) Central Park Mississippi Kite.

A single Common Tern was reported (T. Li) from Randall’s Island (N.Y. County)
on Monday, 5/23; a good sighting for most any part of the county and esp. so
farther away from N.Y. Harbor (with Governors Island and its’ small tern-colony
which has been a site for that one species for some years now). 4 Least
Sandpipers were photo’d. (M. Ryan) at Sherman Creek (north of Swindler Cove
Park in n. Manhattan, on Monday, for more indication that some shorebird
movement continues. Some other ‘wader’ species also have continued for the
county including Solitary and Spotted Sanpipers, and the ongoing Killdeer, some
of the latter nesting or atempting-to.

Many other sightings of great interest continue to come from points all around
the county and by many very fine and energetic observers. Thanks to all of them
&,

good 'late-May' birding to all,

Tom Fiore
