Saturday, Jan. 16th:

Extralimital to NYS, a Ross’s Gull was seen by perhaps 200+ observers at
Hammonassett State Park near Madison, Connecticut on Saturday; some reports &
photo-links have appeared in the CT-Birds list-serve. An eBird report from the
finder of the Ross’s Gull is here (with photos):

In New York County, the least-expected sighting was of a Brown Pelican, which
had also flown farther up and down river north of Manhattan, seen and closely
photographed from Inwood, and Inwood Hill Park in particular with the pix added
to a report thanks to N. O’Reilly: https://ebird.org/checklist/S79351856 -
and thanks also due all others who kept up with this most unusual sighting. A
prior photo-documented sighting of Brown Pelican for N.Y. County waters was
made on Dec. 11, 2019, & is also archived in eBird. Additionally there is an
accepted sight record from Manhattan for June 28, 2019 for that species.

An interesting addition seemingly not noted by most others observing the
lingering Greater White-fronted Goose at the Central Park reservoir on 1/16 was
a description of its calls, heard by Peter W. Post; also found & photographed
by Peter at the reservoir was a female-plumaged Common Merganser, with a record
photo of his added in to U. Mitra’s eBird report from reservoir-birding.
Additionally, a young Iceland Gull was again seen & photographed on the Central
Park reservoir for Saturday.

Over at Carl Schurz Park on Manhattan’s Far East side, off East End Ave.,
84th-90th Streets, the long-staying Western Tanager remained, and an
Orange-crowned Warbler continued as well, the warbler favoring the grounds &
vicinity of Gracie mansion (which is fenced and Off-Limits to the public) near
the n. end of Carl Schurz Park.

Many other species have also lingered all around N.Y. County in the relatively
mild January weather thus far. Thanks to all finding some of these many birds
and reporting sightings.

Good birding to all,
Tom Fiore
