After the absence of any visitors to my backyard feeders this winter a pair of Pine Siskins paid a visit briefly on 3/24. Yesterday I ran a section of the Paumanok Path in Calverton and was treated to the sounds of bluebirds, wood ducks, ravens and spring peepers. Upon returning to my car I grabbed my binoculars for my 5 minute walk/warm down. In only a few minutes I heard the call of Red Crossbills as a female and a then a male landed nearby. Although no obvious signs of nesting were noted, their behavior was suggestive, in that the female seemed to be inspecting a cavity (for nest material?) while the male perched nearby. After only a minute I felt like my presence might be disturbing them (the female was looking my way and not moving) and I decided to move back at which time the female, then the male, flew to the top of a pine and disappeared. I checked the area this morning without luck. Kathryn Klecan Ridge, NY
