The North Shore Audubon Society will hold its monthly program on Tuesday,
November 27, 2018, from 7pm to 9pm, at the Manhasset Public Library, 30
Onderdonk Avenue, Manhasset NY 11030. All are invited, free of charge.
Public transit users: This location is a half-mile walk from the Manhasset
LIRR station.
John Turner will present “Goatsuckers of Long Island – Nighthawk,
Whip-poor-will and Chuck-will’s-widow”
The three "goatsucker" species found on Long Island comprise one of the
more interesting groups of native birds. This program will explore basic
aspects of their biology and ecology, and detail efforts to better understand
their overall population numbers here, including the "Frank Melville Stone
Bridge Nighthawk Watch". You'll also learn the folklore behind why they are
called goatsuckers.
John Turner is a Long Island naturalist, conservationist, writer, and a
founding member of the Long Island Nature Organization and Long Island Pine
Barrens Society. He currently serves as a Conservation Policy Advocate for the
Seatuck Environmental Association and Conservation Chair of the Four Harbors
Audubon Society.
