In my gmail I had to set up a filter that never send emails from
nysbirds-l@cornell.edu to the spam/trash folder.
Before I figured that out I was missing more than half of the emails.

In Gmail:
1. Click on the little cog wheel icon
2. Click Settings
3. Click on Filters and Blocked addresses
4. Create a filter. Voila!
