The North Shore Audubon Society will hold its monthly program on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, from 7pm to 9pm, at the Manhasset Public Library, 30 Onderdonk Avenue, Manhasset NY 11030. All are invited, free of charge. Public transportation users: This location is a half-mile walk from the Manhasset LIRR station. Robert Paxton will present “Bird Banding Basics”. Robert Paxton says “There is nothing that we know about bird behavior that doesn’t come from banding them: where they go, how long they live, whether they are monogamous or polygamous, how many you have at your feeder, where they winter, where they breed. You think you have one at your feeder and then you start banding them and you have ten. Everything we know about bird behavior you have to be able to identify the individual bird and that is done by banding.” Robert Paxton, who himself was a master bird bander for 50 years, only does bird extraction from mist nets now. He has been retired for a few years. He is also a professor emeritus of history at Columbia University.
