I spent about 5 hours on the East Pond today, birding on a rising and falling
tides. Not a whole lot of Shorebirds but enough to keep things interesting. In
total 12 species of for me with 1 additional (Western Sandpiper) seen by Robert
Proniewych and Ed Becher who reported having multiple birds near the Raunt.
My Shorebird highlights include:
Stilt Sandpiper (11) all mostly on the north end.
White-rumped Sandpiper (7)
Pectoral Sandpiper (5 - 4 juveniles and 1 adult)
Duckage highlights include:
Blue-winged Teal (23)
Green-winged Teal (9)
Northern Shoveler (15)
Wood Duck (2)
Other East Pond notable was an Adult Bald Eagle sitting near the Island on the
North End. First time I had one sitting on the pond.
A note on the pond condition and access. The water level on the Pond continues
to improve; walking up from the south to the north end was an easy schlep for
me. Please, note boots still required.
Regarding the recent row over the Call Ahead Trucks blocking the trail head for
the East Pond. Today, I had no such issues when I arrived and upon leaving.
Efforts have been made to communicate with the owner so perhaps there is some
progress on leaving enough room for East Pond south end visitors. Folks are
keeping an eye on the situation so it is hopeful it was a one off and not a
recurring problem.
The list serve is dead, long live the list serve!
