Finally, after 35 years of birding, I got a Black Vulture on Long Island. This was on the way back from the Townsend's Solitaire, in the Cutchogue area. I traversed Alvah's Lane in search of the previously reported Ross' Geese, but didn't find any geese at all. But that led me to a frenzy of gulls, which turned out to be at the Peconic Recycling and Transfer Corp., off Depot Lane. And over the large field beyond it, I saw a small number of vultures - one of which was not like the others.
As for the Townsend's Solitaire, it was mostly in sight between 8:30 and 9:30, and then again between 11:10 and 12:30. Yea, I spent a lot of time there. I came home with 365 pictures. And while that would suggest it was cooperative, it faced me much of the time. So I held out hoping to get side view pictures and the wing pattern. I posted one at http://stevewalternature.com/ . By the way, 365 is not my record for one bird. I recall 366 as the number I took of a Red Phalarope at Shinnecock a few years ago. Had I known I was that close. But I don't know if that's my record anyway. Too silly a thing to commit to memory.
