(mostly) Manhattan, N.Y. City
Killdeer have come through on Manhattan, N.Y. City (& surely many
other places), if some were not already present; at least 4 were on
the far-west fields at Inwood Hill Park in n. Manhattan this morning.,
with at least 8 also present at Van Cortlandt Park's parade grounds
field (Bronx County) to Fri. (2/26); Belted Kingfishers were also
present at both of these parks. The fields at Van Cortlandt Pk. had
at least 700 Canada Geese & no other species were noted amongst those.
A small number of blackbirds, including a couple of Rusty & several
dozen Red-winged Blackbirds were seen in Van Cortlandt, with Common
Grackles as well as American Robins slightly more numerous & generally
distributed. At least a dozen Red-breasted Mergansers were observed
flying up the Hudson river, from near Dyckman St. in n. Manhattan.
In Central Park (Manhattan), breeding-male & female-looking Red-
breasted Mergansers have both been on the reservoir; gulls there on
Friday were in minimal numbers & no white-winged individuals were
noticed; Canada Geese there continue, with just a bit of coming-&-
going (perhaps still including a 'smaller' goose); at least 1 pair of
Hooded Mergansers were among the waterfowl, & other ongoing birds are
as they've been with Pied-billed Grebe, D.-cr. Cormorants, Amer.
Coots, & good no's. of N. Shovelers, some Buffleheads, Ruddy Ducks in
small no's. & other typical species all present at the reservoir.
At the southeast part of Central Park, a Great Blue Heron, drake Wood
Duck, American Coot, & 1 of the over-wintering Brown Thrashers were
seen - the thrashers have been thru the areas that include the CP zoo
grounds as well as Hallett Sanctuary & occasionally just outside these
sites, as one was this very early Sat. a.m. - also in the area have
been Gray Catbird, & E. Towhee. Another overwintering E. Towhee is
ongoing near the Boathouse cafe's n. side & vicinity, & there are a
couple of other sites in the park where these 3 passerines have been
seen thru this month. Small no's. of Cedar Waxwings continue to be
seen in several locations of Manhattan; so far this year, I've not
seen more than about 25 or so in any one flock.
..................
Friday/26th, in Central Park, 5 Wood Ducks (3 drakes together on the
lake, & a pair at the Pond in a.m.), adult Cooper's Hawk at the Point,
fewer grackles, fewer robins (some of these have moved on from the
flocks in Central Park just recently).
good birding,
