We put in some effort on Friday and Saturday mornings at Robert Moses SP, near
the western tip of Fire Island, Suffolk, LI, but the flights both mornings
were, to be charitable, very manageable. Tree Swallows are still migrating here
in some numbers, which tends to be an impediment rather than an aid to
detecting Cave Swallows. This morning we finally sifted out a Petrochelidon,
but it wasn't the one we were almost expecting: it was a black-throated,
white-fronted Cliff Swallow, on an unusually late date.

Over the years, we've accumulated sparse but regular records of Cliff Swallows
on the barrier beach through the first week or so of October; our only prior
record comparable to today's was a bird at Orient Pt on 30 Oct 2012, in the
wake of Sandy.

While I decided to stay in and work today, Pat ran out East and checked on
Mecox, Sag, and the Montauk area. It was decidedly underwhelming. Highlights
were on the order of Royal Terns and White-crowned Sparrow at Mecox, Lesser
Black-backed Gull and Snow Bunting at Sagaponack, Eastern Bluebirds and
Baltimore Oriole (plus the only Gray Catbird of recent days) at Deep Hollow,
and a Gray Seal plus three of the increasingly rare and elusive (!) Bonaparte's
Gull at Montauk.

We are hoping that the current southwesterly flow will shuffle the deck!

As Cave Swallows have been scarce in the NE the last two years, this forecast
is very promising. A very cool animated wind forecast site (link below)
certainly reinforces the possibilities of the next several days, in a bit more
user-friendly and customizable graphical fashion.
