*Tenth Annual Jamaica Bay Shorebird Festival, Saturday, August 29th, 2015*
During the past 40 years approximately 43 species of shorebirds (including rare and accidentalstrays) have been recorded at the East and West Ponds from mid-July through October with the greatest diversity and abundance usually occurring during the month of August. We invite you to attend our 1029th. Once again, NYC Audubon will provide bus transportation from mid-town Manhattan for our members on a first come reservation basis. The following is the proposed agenda: 7:30am – Continental breakfast at Refuge Visitor Center –Coffee, donuts, juice, etc. 8:00am – Hike to the East and/or West Pond during high tide ( Kevin Karlson, Lloyd Spitalnik, Tom Burke, et. Al.) 10:30am – NPS Welcome ( Gateway Superintendent Jen Nersesian or other NPS staff) 10:40am - Overview of Jamaica Bay issues and wildlife ( Don Riepe) 11:15am – NYC Audubon Shorebird Research ( Susan Elbin, Debra Kriensky) 11:45am – Shorebirds of Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge ( Lloyd Spitalnik) 12:20pm - lunch ( on your own; deli located in nearby Broad Channel) 1:15pm – Hikes to East and West Ponds, or alternative sites ( all leaders) 3:30pm – Birding by Impression (Kevin Karlson) 4:30pm – Discussion and wrap up For information and reservations, call NYC Audubon (212) 691-7483 e-mail: [email protected] This is a Gateway National Recreation Area partnership program with The American Littoral Society and NYC Audubon.
