I heard a few flight calls late last night despite the unfavorable winds, so I decided to check out Hempstead Lake this morning. Apparently lots of others had the same idea, as I ran into and had the pleasure to bird with a number of listserv regulars. Notable spring firsts included SWAINSON'S THRUSH, SOLITARY SANDPIPER, and EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE. We also managed to break into the double digits on warbler diversity, counting 10 species: BLACKBURNIAN, WILSON'S, REDSTART, CANADA, BLACKPOLL, MAGNOLIA, PARULA, BLACK-AND-WHITE, YELLOW, and YELLOW-RUMPED. Others also saw a N. WATERTHRUSH that I failed to relocate. Multiple BALTIMORE ORIOLES were joined by a first-year male ORCHARD. My final total was 55 species, with plenty of quality birds included.
