5/2/15 Sabattis Bog & Spring Pond Bog complex (Hamilton & Franklin Co.) first-of-the-season: *
Our feeder seed is running out, but we still have finches - Purple Finches, 4 Pine Siskins, & Amer. Goldfinches. (So far, the last date I observed a Common Redpoll was 4/29/15). The local Gray Jay pair greeted me as I stopped my car at Sabattis Bog - fortunately, I had some food! I hope their nesting was a success. I don't usually observe juveniles until later in May. I birded the roads (some in rough shape!) and hiked some of the state land in the Spring Pond Bog complex (I didn't visit the bog). Here are some of the birds found: Black-backed Woodpecker - one calling on my first stop Blue-headed Vireo Boreal Chickadee - in the same wetland area where I found the Rusty Blackbird pair Winter Wren *Northern Waterthrush - 1 singing *Black-and-white Warbler - 1 Palm Warbler - many Pine Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler - many Rusty Blackbird - pair in a vast wetland area on state land where this species has historically bred (photos on my Facebook page below) Coltsfoot is in bloom (photo on Facebook) 5/1/15 Long Lake *Black-throated Green Warbler - heard in town 4/30/15 areas of Hamilton & Franklin Counties Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - male working on a nest hole - he was nearly finished! Black-backed Woodpecker - 5! (Two different pairs, and a male) I found a nest site in Hamilton Co. This is the first time I've observed a female working on a nest hole - she wasn't working very hard! It appeared that she was place-holding until the male finished foraging! (photo on my Facebook page) *Blue-headed Vireo - widespread 4/29/15 Massawepie Mire I was out with Saint Lawrence Univ.
