Thanks for all the feedback on the pictures. I received about 12 emails and everyone thought it was a Pileated Woodpecker hole. Some had complete certainty! Aidan and I were walking in Avalon Preserve today in Stony Brook, NY and came across two fresh holes in a dead tree. It really looks like something a Pileated Woodpecker would make. Does anyone have any thoughts on what this hole could be if not a Pileated?
