[~BEGIN RBA TAPE~]
Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, July 3 at
5:00 pm.

The highlights of today’s tape are ARCTIC TERN, such breeding birds as
LEAST BITTERN, CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW, YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER, and BLUE
GROSBEAK, a Jamaica Bay appeal and a pelagic trip reminder, plus a New York
City EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE.

ARTIC TERN appearances on the mud flats north of the Cupsogue County Park
parking lot in Westhampton Dunes have been less reliable than expected this
year, but one did appear there for a short while last Saturday afternoon,
this another first-year bird. Also at Cupsogue there were indications of
some southbound shorebird movement with the appearance of even more
SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHERS and a LEAST SANDPIPER.

Some interesting Long Island breeders this season include LEAST BITTERN,
which has nested on the north fork at Arshamomaque Preserve, just west of
Greenport. The sanctuary is reached from the west side of Chapel Lane,
north of Route 25, and the birds, including three young, are sometimes
visible along a pond edge viewed from an observation tower off the green
trail—a telescope is strongly recommended. VIRGINIA RAILS can also be
heard there.

In the Napeague area on the south fork CHUCK-WILL’S-WIDOW and
WHIP-POOR-WILL continue their evening singing along Lazy Point Road and
Napeague Meadow Road.

At Connetquot River State Park two male YELLOW-THROATED WARBLERS continue
maintaining their territories between the entrance booths and the buildings
near the main pond. Hopefully they will duplicate last year’s successful
nesting.

Most vulnerable of all these are the low nesting BLUE GROSBEAKS at a couple
of locations around the Calverton Grasslands at the former Grumman
airport. This important area also contains healthy populations of
GRASSHOPPER and SAVANNAH SPARROWS and EASTERN MEADOWLARKS, as well as
numerous other species, including AMERICAN KESTREL. This most productive
of all the eastern Long Island grasslands certainly deserves protection
from further development.

What is presumably the same EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE seen last week at Pier
63 in Manhattan, was present today in the Chelsea Waterside Park, just west
of 11th Avenue off the west end of 23rd Street.

For Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge now is a very important time regarding the
future of the West Pond. Proceedings this month will be instrumental in
determining whether the breach in the West Pond will be repaired and thus
whether the pond and surrounding area will be restored to pre-Sandy
productivity. If you haven’t already, please sign the restoration
petition, found on the internet at http://tinyurl.com/west-pond-petition
Also please refer to Seth Ausubel’s post of Monday June 30 at aba.org
under Birding News for New York for information on key meetings and
follow-up regarding the refuge. Your involvement is important!

For information on and reservations for the See Life Paulagics trip leaving
Freeport, Long Island, at 8 PM on Monday, August 11th aboard the Captain
Lou Fleet’s Star Stream VIII, please call 215-234-6805 or visit their
website at www.paulagics.com

To phone in reports on Long Island, call Tony Lauro at (631) 734-4126, or

National Audubon Society. Thank you for calling and have a happy 4th!
