Rare on Long Island in spring, a Clay-colored Sparrow was an unexpected find at Captree SP, Suffolk, LI this morning.
Initially, it fed along the grassy margins of the northern edge of the main lot, between the bait and tackle shop east of the concession building and the hedge occupied by the cat colony: https://picasaweb.google.com/109808209543611018404/LongIslandMiscellany2014#6011481797723496418 Later, it flew north over the bay, then arced back to the left and appeared to land a little bit west of the concession building. As mentioned by Tom F, it was a very dynamic morning in this part of the state, with many Neotropical migrants moving around in the rain and fog.
