Thanks to Mike Galas for getting the word out about this bird. This
morning, while scanning Lake Ontario and counting RED-NECKED GREBES, I came
across a WESTERN GREBE! This is only the second ever recorded in Kingbird
Region 1. I kept watch for over an hour and was able to show it to Celeste
Morien and Joe Mitchell. It was quite distant (1/2 to 1 mile) but the lake
was relatively calm so we were able to stay on it. For the entire
observation of more than two hours, it stayed between 1:00 and 2:00
observation angle (with 12:00 being straight out). The location is Barker
Bicentennial Park, a small park at the end of Quaker Road (NY 248) in the
Town of Somerset, Niagara County. I was up to 140 RED-NECKED GREBES when I
found the Western after having scanned 2/3 of the horizon so I probably
would have added at least another 20 had I been able to complete the pan.
There were also lots of HORNED GREBES here, probably more than 100 but I
didn't get a chance to count them. J

Good birding!
